Michael Hill, MD, FACEP President After practicing emergency medicine for 15 years, leading quality improvement initiatives, working as a physician political and business leader with one of the West Coast's premier emergency medical groups, and serving on numerous advisory boards and associations, Dr. Michael Hill created EMPATH to respond to the complex, multi-faceted needs of hospitals and healthcare systems. Dr. Hill's business acumen, change management expertise, and clinical system knowledge have helped clients to realize significant financial and operational benefits. He has led and managed a multitude of change management projects across the country, including APC implementation for more than 45 hospitals, and multiple large-scale innovation projects. Prior to founding EMPATH, Dr. Hill served as Quality Improvement Director and Medical Director of Operations for Emergency Physicians' Medical Group (EPMG). In these capacities, Dr. Hill was responsible for the development and implementation of a Quality Improvement and Site Visit Program for over 25 hospitals. He also developed operational guidelines and actively participated in the development of medical information systems for EPMG's emergency departments. He served as the start-up physician director for five hospitals and served as regional director for nine hospitals. As a member of Columbia/HCA's Emergency Department Best Practices Team, Dr. Hill works with Columbia/HCA's portfolio of 343 hospitals. He is one of two physicians selected by a panel of Columbia/HCA senior leadership to be a part of this interdisciplinary team. The team reduced the average ED length of stay in participating hospitals by 30 minutes. The experience and knowledge base he has gained provide a unique and powerful insight into the operational and financial performance of the emergency department. Dr. Hill has been a planning committee member of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's "Break-through Series Guide: Reducing Delays and Waiting Times in the Emergency Department", and speaks nationally on reducing ED patient length of stay and improving ED patient satisfaction. He has been Course Chairman of the annual national educational program "Improving Emergency Department Patient Satisfaction and Reducing Length of Stay." He also served as a consultant to the Advisory Board's 1999 Clinical Initiative on "The Clockwork ED" and continues to consult with the Advisory Board on various continuing Advisory Board activities. Dr. Hill recently co-authored the article "Does Sharing Process Differences Reduce Patient Length of Stay in the Emergency Department?" published in the November 2001 Annals of Emergency Medicine. This article presents on the effectiveness of implementing length of stay reduction best practices at a hospital system level. The study created the largest database of benchmark time performance standards for EDs available in the medical literature. Dr. Hill received a 2001 Council Meritorious Service Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). This award is presented to an ACEP member who has made consistent contributions to the growth and maturation of the ACEP Council. Dr. Hill is Past President of the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and has recently completed three years as a member of the Steering Committee of the Council of the ACEP. |
