EMPATH Aims to Aid Patient Flow

Fayetteville, North Carolina (October 2006)

If you've ever suffered from a runny nose, hacking cough or suffocating congestion, you know that these are symptoms of a larger systemic illness - the common cold.

As it turns out, a different form of congestion found in the Emergency Department (ED) is also a symptom - a symptom of a larger health system-wide process problem that hinders patient flow.

But relief is in sight.

This fall, EMPATH, a physician-led company that specializes in implementing large-scale operational change, will work with Cape Fear Valley front-line employees to overhaul and redesign system-wide processes that impede efficient patient flow.

The Board of Trustees approved the project at its Aug. 30 (2006) meeting.

By changing the underlying process problems, the project will pursue the following "symptomatic relief:"

  • Reduce ED wait times
  • Expedite "Door to Floor" time for patients who are admitted
  • Facilitate direct patient admissions from physicians' offices
  • Increase bed availability for surgical and other patients
  • Reduce length of stay for acute patients
  • Reduce cycle times for diagnostic test results from Lab and Radiology
  • Improve physician and patient satisfaction

EMPATH has already helped more than 70 hospitals transform and improve processes that affect patient flow. Past clients include Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, Medical College of Virginia, UCLA Medical Center, Henry Ford Hospital, and Sacred Medical Center in Spokane, Washington.

The company has decreased inpatient discharge processing times and average length of stay for ED patients by 30-50 percent at other hospitals. Patient satisfaction scores have increased 100-200 percent.

By employing multiple teams at once, EMPATH can help Cape Fear Valley address multiple problems simultaneously. EMPATH offers an IT system that will enable Cape Fear Valley to monitor its other existing computer systems that affect patient flow.

"Much like an air traffic control system, EMPATH has some really unique tools that will help us monitor our other systems and bring transparency to how we do things," said Vanessa King, PharmD., Director of Clinical Transformation. "EMPATH will help us achieve better results, faster."

And with winter flu and cold season fast approaching, that's just what the doctor ordered.
