EMPATH was asked to perform an initial evaluation of the operational and financial performance of this 625 bed not-for-profit hospital with a 40,000 annual visit ER. Our evaluation included recommendations to make changes in professional and facility staffing and redesigned patient care processes affecting the ER including laboratory, radiology, bed control, inpatient intake and discharge, and revenue processes. Our economic valuation of ER practices revealed several million dollars of economic opportunity to be gained with improved hospital capacity and ER performance. EMPATH completed a ten-month facility-wide initiative, training more than 1,500 staff to introduce efficiencies in both the inpatient intake and discharge as well as the ER, to achieve the ED's and facility's performance goals of being the "Best ED in the State."

Overall results included reduction in most Key Performance Indicator cycle times by 30-50% and a reduction in inpatient length of stay by 0.5 days, resulting in a reduction in labor cost by $400,000/quarter for inpatient discharges. In addition, the Arizona Hospital Association awarded the ED "Best ED in the State."
