Massachusetts Client

This client is a private, not-for-profit, 547 licensed bed, academic medical center. They have the largest 24-hour Level 1 trauma center in New England, and its emergency department treats more than 124,000 patients annually.

EMPATH worked with this client in a yearlong project focused on improving inpatient flow, reducing ED crowding and creating earlier MD discharge order writing and patient discharge. EMPATH's coaching role included: developing the operational metrics data collection system and reports; providing technical support to hospital staff as they introduced the change processes; monitoring the effectiveness of the hospital team charged with implementation; identifying roadblocks and resolving issues.

EMPATH worked with the Chief Medical Officer and the ED Medical Director, creating measurement systems for ED and inpatient cycle times, and developing strategies to create an earlier time of discharge order and to reduce patient discharge times. This work helped reduce ED length of stay by 30%, elevating ED customer satisfaction by 60% and reducing ED arrival to MD evaluation time by 60%.
