Michigan Client

This client is a 903-bed tertiary care hospital, education and research complex located in a major metropolitan area. The hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center and its emergency department treats over 90,000 patients annually.

EMPATH worked with this client in a yearlong project focused on improving inpatient flow, reducing ED crowding and creating earlier MD discharge order writing and patient discharge. EMPATH's coaching role included: developing the operational metrics data collection system and reports; providing technical support to hospital staff as they introduced the change processes; monitoring the effectiveness of the hospital team charged with implementation; identifying roadblocks and resolving issues.

EMPATH worked with the hospital's Chief Operating Officer, Chief Medical Officer and ED Manager to decrease ED crowding, ED admission times, inpatient discharge order time and overall discharge times. EMPATH created the measurement systems to track and monitor ED and inpatient cycle times. ED Length of Stay Cycle Time decreased by 30%, with a decrease in Arrival to Bed Placement by 60%. Inpatient discharge times were measured by individual specialty, and overall time of MD discharge order changed from 3PM to 1PM.
